THE PREDICTION

38-year-old Fernando Verdasco rolled back the years on Wednesday to oust an out-of-sorts Nikoloz Basilashvili in straight sets. The Spaniard snapped a five-match losing run at tour level with that win over the sixth seed, stretching back to a quarter-final exit at the Estoril Open in April. He stands a fair chance at emulating that run here against world number 144 Aleksandar Vukic, although the Aussie will be buzzing after defeating former world number nine Fabio Fognini in straight sets. The 26-year-old has spent the majority of his season on the Challenger circuit but both he and Verdasco have five tour-level wins this season. A first meeting between the two leaves more questions than answers but backing Verdasco’s experience to see him earn at least a set seems a sensible way to avoid the overall result.
