THE PREDICTION

20-year-old Hamad Medjedovic set a career-high ATP world ranking of 102nd after stunning the filed to win the Next Gen ATP Finals crown late last season, upsetting overwhelming favourite Arthur Fils in the final. The Serb proved himself a serious up-and-comer last summer, enjoying plenty of success off of the tour and reaching the semi-finals of the Gstaad Open on clay, but he has struggled with fitness so far this season, qualifying for his first tournament here in Madrid.

World number 97 Aleksandar Kovacevic also qualified, handily, this week to make his Madrid debut and he took Jordan Thompson to three sets before a tight defeat on the surface last time out in Houston. The 25-year-old has so far enjoyed one of his stronger seasons on tour but if this first encounter found both at their best, Medjedovic should be coming through. Back the Serb to build on his qualifying confidence with at least a set here to leave the result up to chance.

TIP: HAMAD MEDJEDOVIC TO WIN A SET
