THE PREDICTION
24-year-old Aleksandar Kovacevic set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 102nd this week after beating a quality field to the Phoenix Challenger last weekend and he continued that form with a three-set victory over Jaume Munar on Wednesday. The American came through to the main draw as a lucky loser after falling to Aleksandar Vukic in the final round of qualifying but that second wind couple with his momentum from last week makes the upset look feasible here in a first meeting with Francisco Cerundolo. World number 31 Cerundolo burst onto the scene here last season with a stupendous run to the semi-finals before defeat to eventual runner-up Casper Ruud and he took that form onto the clay to win a maiden ATP title at the Bastad Open later in the summer. The Argentine has struggled to find that level practically ever since the return to hardcourts late last year but he should have enough about him to see off Kovacevic after a win over Jack Sock at this stage of Indian Wells. Backing Kovacevic to win at least a set seems tempting here but taking Cerundolo to win outright remains the sensible call.
