Former world number 17 Cristian Garin is currently ranked 99th after another frustrating season on tour. The 27-year-old still has time to rediscover his once consistent high level but he has shown only brief flashes of that in 2023, spending much of it on the Challenger circuit. World number 117 Aleksandar Kovacevic qualified the hard way for Shanghai in two three-setters this week but that should give the American some real momentum for this first encounter with Garin.
