THE PREDICTION
This is an enormous opportunity for two unlikely quarter-finalists in world number 32 Alejandro Tabilo and number 56 Zhizhen Zhang, meeting for the first time in tour for a place in the last four. 27-year-old Zhang has been here before, reaching the quarter-finals of the Madrid Masters last spring before missing out to Aslan Karatsev, but straight-sets wins all the way, including over Ben Shelton and in-form Thiago Monteiro, should see him with much more energy this time around.
26-year-old Tabilo is also through to the last eight without dropping a set, though, and his run includes six-time Rome champion Novak Djokovic before a remarkably resolute effort over 16th seed Karen Khachanov on Tuesday. We may never know how much Djokovic’s freak water bottle incident affected their match on Sunday but beating Khachanov, who is often an excellent litmus test for deep runners at this level, 12-10 in their second-set tiebreak yesterday feels significant. Back Tabilo to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
TIP: ALEJANDRO TABILO TO WIN A SET
