THE PREDICTION
World number 19 Cam Norrie finished runner-up to Richard Gasquet here last season, his second defeat in the Auckland final, and he will be desperate to make it third time lucky in the city where he grew up. The former number eight overcame a strong challenge by Luca Van Assche on Wednesday, outlasting the youngster over three sets, to earn what should be a simpler fixture in this first meeting with world number 82 Alejandro Tabilo. 26-year-old Tabilo is on a strong run, though, after coming through qualifying to outlast Borna Gojo in three sets and an out-of-sorts Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets on Wednesday. The Chilean ended 2023 with some hard work on the Challenger circuit on his favoured clay, winning titles in Ecuador and Brazil, and that looks to have given him a boost on hardcourts so far. Norrie endured a middling-to-poor 2023 season but there were encouraging signs last week at the United Cup. Back the Brit win outright with three sets about as likely as two.
TIP: CAM NORRIE TO WIN
