World number 167 Roman Safiullin has been the star of the week in Sydney with four wins from the four matches he has been involved in. The 24-year-old beat Arthur Rinderknech and the French doubles pair alongside Daniil Medvedev for a 2-1 victory in their first tie and then he bested that with a straight-sets win over Australia’s James Duckworth before he and Medvedev made it 5-1 to Russia in Group B. Safiullin is the severe underdog here, though, against the best second option in the ATP Cup in world number 10 Jannik Sinner. The 20-year-old is yet to drop a set in victories over Max Purcell and Rinderknech and he partnered well alongside Matteo Berrettini in the doubles against France to keep Italy within reach of the semi-finals.
The doubles decider looks a vital one in this tie between two of the pre-tournament favourites with Sinner looking the likely winner of this scrap. However, Safiullin’s performances this week have earned much respect and it would not be a surprise to see him cause an even bigger upset.
