Taylor Fritz turned 24 years old on Thursday and the American celebrated by beating his compatriot Tommy Paul in straight sets to reach the St. Petersburg Open quarter-finals. Fritz burst into form at Indian Wells earlier this month with a stunning run to the semi-finals, beating in-form Alexander Zverev in three sets after also shocking Matteo Berrettini and Jannik Sinner. With his confidence safely reinstalled he will face John Millman with belief that he can go all the way in Russia but 32-year-old Millman took out the fourth seed and recent Kremlin Cup champion Aslan Karatsev with just five games conceded on Thursday for one of his best results of the season.
Fritz was the winner of their only previous encounter, taking their second round clash at the Mexican Open last season in three sets.
