THE LOWDOWN
Fifth seed Matteo Berrettini made it past a potential banana skin in Alejandro Tabilo to reach the third round of Indian Wells for the first time in his career. The 25-year-old won his first ATP 500 event earlier this year at Queen’s as part of an incredible grass swing in which he lost just one match to finish runner-up to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon. The Italian also won the Serbia Open on clay earlier this season as well as reaching the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros and the US Open, losing out again to Djokovic on both occasions. World number 39 Taylor Fritz won his only ATP title to date on grass too with a great campaign at the Eastbourne International in 2019. The 23-year-old has struggled with fitness issues recently but a straight-sets victory over Brandon Nakashima on Sunday is a good sign of his returning physicality.
THE PREDICTION
Two of the best, most powerful forehands will face-off for a first time as world number seven Matteo Berrettini meets Taylor Fritz in the third round. Fritz is a popular player with the Indian Wells faithful and he should enjoy most of the support for once on court despite playing a popular player in Berrettini. The Italian could be something of a sleeper threat this week if he gathers momentum and without his, and admittedly almost everyone else’s, kryptonite Novak Djokovic missing from proceedings. Berrettini’s is a tough serve to break and the likelihood is that he can win this in straight sets despite Fritz’ impressive performance. Take him to win outright instead, cautiously, and for at least one tiebreak in the match between two heavy-hitters.
