World number three Karolina Pliskova ultimately came through her first Indian Wells match as the top seed in comfortable fashion against Poland’s Magdalena Frech on Saturday. The 29-year-old is most certainly a title contender but with so many other players’ names in the mix she is so far flying under the radar, which suits her just fine. The former number one is yet to add to her career total of 16 WTA titles this season but she has reached two Masters finals in Rome and Montreal as well as at Wimbledon. World number 115 Beatriz Haddad-Maia made full use of her lucky loser status and a bye to the second round with a straight-sets victory over Mayar Sherif. The 25-year-old conceded just three games to the Egyptian to reach the third round and match her best ever Masters result from the Miami Open in 2018.
THE PREDICTION
Karolina Pliskova has led a charmed life so far at Indian Wells with a favourable set of fixtures. She conceded just two games to Beatriz Haddad-Maia in their only previous meeting in the second round of the Australian Open and there is little to suggest anything other than a straight-sets victory here too. Haddad-Maia has done herself proud after a poor qualifying campaign turned to gold but Pliskova lives several floors above the Brazilian’s ceiling. The Czech should come through with less than six games conceded here.
