THE LOWDOWN
12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta conceded just five games to Emilio Gomez in the second round of Indian Wells but he just lost out in an exciting doubles partnership with Carloz Alcaraz on Saturday. The 30-year-old won a Bronze Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games with an incredible win over Novak Djokovic back in August after losing to Karen Khachanov in the semi-finals and he has won two further ATP titles at the Andalucia Open and Hamburg Open. World number 29 Khachanov went one better in Tokyo by winning a Silver Medal in defeat to Alexander Zverev. The 25-year-old survived a potential banana skin on Sunday by beating Emil Ruusuvuori in straight sets in a promising improvement from his Moselle Open defeat to Peter Gojowczyk two weeks ago. The Russian made the quarter-finals of Wimbledon this season in a return to form but it is still unclear how his season will end.
THE PREDICTION
This promises to be an excellent watch at Indian Wells between two players at home on both the clay and hardcourts, with the conditions here suiting their playstyles to no end. Their head-to-head record is finely poised on three wins apiece after Khachanov’s victory at the Olympics and, oddly, each of their other five matches have all taken place at Masters events. Overall, PCB has beaten Khachanov twice on clay at the Monte-Carlo Open and once at the Canadian Open in 2017, whilst Khachanov has won three of the last four meetings with straight-set results at the Canadian Open a year later in 2018, the Cincinnati Open last season and then in Tokyo this summer. With hardcourt meetings edging towards the Russian 3-1, take Khachanov to win at least a set here as the likelier of two very capable winners.
