World number three Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Pedro Martinez in straightforward fashion on Sunday to reach the third round at Indian Wells for a first time. The 23-year-old claimed his first Masters title earlier this season at the Monte-Carlo Open but his crowing glory to date is winning the year-end ATP Finals in 2019. World number 30 Fabio Fognini also earned his only Masters title at the Monte-Carlo Open back in 2019 for the last of his total nine ATP titles. The 34-year-old is at his best on clay but the slower conditions have so far suited his one-of-a-kind, swashbuckling backhand that often proves a crowd favourite.
THE PREDICTION
Tsitsipas has beaten Fognini in straight sets on both of their previous meetings, including at Masters level in the round of 16 of the Italian Open back in 2019. The Greek has several gears to find at Indian Wells still but must never be erased from the title-contender conversation and it is hard to see Fognini’s fairly bespoke set of weapons piercing his armour enough to snatch a set, here let alone win. Inside an accumulator Tsitsipas to win is the least stressful option but realistically he should be coming through in two here.
