THE LOWDOWN
World number 20 Dan Evans is set to break the top 20 for the first time in his career after a sensational fightback overt Kei Nishikori in the second round of Indian Wells. The 31-year-old made the Monte-Carlo Open semi-finals earlier this season before defeat to the eventual champion Stefanos Tsitsipas but he grabbed a career-best win along the way by ousting Novak Djokovic in straight sets. Evans won his first ATP title at the start of the season at the Murray River Open in Melbourne. World number 15 Diego Schwartzman came perilously close to defeat against Maxime Cressy on Saturday but the tireless Argentine dug his way into the third round here for a second time. The 29-year-old won his fourth career title, and a third on his favoured clay, earlier this season at the Buenos Aires Open but he also has a hardcourt title from the 2019 Los Cabos Open.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a vastly entertaining match between the silky hand-skills of Dan Evans and the never-say-die moxie from Diego Schwartzman. With the average rally length likely to sail over seven on these slower courts at Indian Wells, three sets look like happening one again after their first meeting just under two months ago at the Cincinnati Open. Evans came off the worse that day with his fitness not quite up to scratch after a bout of covid-19 but this should be an even tighter affair. Take this match to see three sets or for Evans to win at least one as the likelier of two very capable winners.
