THE LOWDOWN
25-year-old Cristian Garin will reach a new career-high ATP world ranking no matter the outcome of this third round clash with Alex de Minaur after taking out Ernesto Escobedo in straight sets on Sunday. The Chilean won the fifth title of his career earlier this season, and on home clay at the Chile Open, but a run to the round of 16 at both Roland-Garros and Wimbledon is equally impressive as signs of progress. World number 27 Alex de Minaur has had an odd season to say the least, with two title-winning campaigns at the Antalya Open and Eastbourne International bringing him to five career titles too amongst some definite missed opportunities. The 22-year-old snapped a four-match losing streak with a straight-sets victory over fellow Aussie Aleksandar Vukic on Sunday for his first win on a hard court since the first round of the Rotterdam Open in March.
THE PREDICTION
This looks the hardest match to call on Tuesday between two players probably at their best on other surfaces who performed well in their opening matches. The slightly slower conditions here at Indian Wells have so far suited some of the more clay-orientated players and that should help both Cristian Garin, with five titles on his favoured surface, and one of the fastest men on tour in Alex de Minaur. The greater chance of catching every ball makes De Minaur a tempting pick here but caution suggests taking the Aussie to win at least a set instead is the wisest move.
