THE LOWDOWN
10th seed Angelique Kerber did well to come back in the deciding set against Katerina Siniakova after losing a second-set tiebreak to the Czech on Saturday. The former world number one is a three-time Grand Slam champion with wins at the US Open and Australian Open in 2016 and at Wimbledon in 2018 and a former finalist here from 2019 where she lost to Bianca Andreescu. Kerber won the 13th title of her career earlier this season at the Bad Homburg Open. 24-year-old Daria Kasatkina also finished runner-up here to Naomi Osaka the year before in her best season on tour so far, where she set her career-high WTA world ranking at 10th. The Russian played just seven games with Astra Sharma on Saturday before the Aussie was forced to retire.
THE PREDICTION
This is an intriguing third round clash and the ninth instalment of a finely poised 4-4 head-to-head record between Angelique Kerber and Daria Kasatkina. 33-year-old Kerber has won both of their meetings on grass, where the German is probably at her best, but Kasatkina leads the rest of their matches on hardcourts 4-2 including their most recent meeting in the first round of the 2019 Canadian Open. The pair met in the quarter-finals of Indian Wells three years ago where Kerber won in blistering straight sets at the height of her powers but this should be a tougher prospect. Both players know how to reach a final in the desert but the slow courts should favour Kerber’s uber-defence and she is probably the woman in better form at this moment in time. Take the German to win outright.
