THE LOWDOWN
Current world number 20 Anett Kontaveit is on her way to breaking her career-high 14th set two years ago if she carries on in this form. The 25-year-old was a game away from victory in straight sets over Martina Trevisan on Saturday before the Italian retired to make it seven matches now without defeat. Whilst technically not a streak, because the Estonian pulled out of her second round match at the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic last week before taking to the court, only Iga Swiatek has beaten her since mid-August. Two titles won at the Cleveland Championships and Ostrava Open either side of a third round exit to Swiatek at the US Open is almost certainly the best form of her career to date.
World number 21 Bianca Andreescu is seeded two places above Anett Kontaveit on previous rankings and the 16th seed got her Indian Wells title defence (from 2019) underway with a three set victory over Alison Riske. The 21-yaear-old made the final of the Miami Open this season before retiring in the second set to hand victory to Ash Barty but she has not appeared to suffer any further injuries since August. Andreescu’s Indian Wells win in 2019 was the start of an incredible season that saw her win a second Masters title at the Canadian Open before a stunning run to the US Open title.
THE PREDICTION
This is a huge hurdle for the reigning Indian Wells champion Bianca Andreescu to face in the third round. The 21-year-old has never beaten Anett Kontaveit before, with a defeat to the Estonian earlier this season at the Eastbourne International and a retirement from their first meeting at the Miami Open two years ago setting the head-to-head record at 2-0. Furthermore, Kontaveit is in excellent form right now with Iga Swiatek the only player able to beat her over her last 15 matches. Taking the Estonian to win at least a set here looks a shrewd move, especially as Andreescu often finds herself in deciding sets.
