THE LOWDOWN

Andy Murray employed some of his best match-play from yesteryear, and a new trick in the form of a deft underarm ace to win a key game, to beat 18-year-old wunderkind Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday.

The 34-year-old was effusive in his praise for Alcaraz after the match, with the young Spaniard providing more of the best shots but falling away in the key moments after snatching a tight first set. Murray has won six of the nine current ATP Masters 1000 events but Indian Wells, Miami and Monte-Carlo have so far escaped him.

World number four Alexander Zverev was in a match on Sunday afternoon too but he reacted well to dropping the second set to an impressive Jenson Brooksby to come through the winner. The 24-year-old is close to reaching his career-high ATP world ranking of 3rd first achieved in 2017 after a stellar year on court, with three titles won at the Mexican Open, Madrid Masters, Cincinnati Masters and a Gold Medal from the Tokyo Olympic Games.

THE PREDICTION

What a blockbuster of a third round match this should turn out to be between world number four Alexander Zverev and former world number one Andy Murray. Zverev was the last player inside the top 10 that Murray beat, in a three-set encounter almost exactly a year ago at the Cincinnati Open, and the Brit will be keen to maintain his 100% win record over the German having won their only previous encounter at the Australian Open in 2016. World number four Zverev is the solid favourite to come through this third meeting but his three-set battle with Jenson Brooksby is proof that he can be taken apart with the backing of a partisan crowd. With public perception of the 24-year-old currently deteriorating, a partisan crowd should help Murray to at least a set here. Still, the most sensible option is for Zverev to win at least one too.
