World number five Andrey Rublev came through a winnable opening fixture with Carlos Taberner comfortably on Saturday to reach the third round at Indian Wells for a second time. The 23-year-old has been enjoying his doubles lately and alongside Aslan Karatsev he made it through to the quarter-finals on Sunday. The pair were part of Team Russian at the start of the season that won the ATP Cup and he won the eighth title of his career at the Rotterdam Open a few months later. World number 60 Tommy Paul has been in impressive form so far at Indian Wells with two strong wins in straight sets over Feliciano Lopez and Dusan Lajovic. The 24-year-old has been as high as 50th in the ATP world rankings with plenty of potential for more in his future.
THE PREDICTION
Andrey Rublev leads the head-to-head record with Tommy Paul 3-0 with wins at the 2018 Washington Open, 2020 Hamburg Open and a third earlier this year at the Madrid Open. Both meetings on clay went to a deciding set with Paul probably at his best on that surface but it is hard to see him beating the Russian on a big stage like this and on a hard court. The crowd will help him out and the slower courts may also limit Rublev’s effectiveness, so taking the world number five to win outright looks the best option here.
