THE LOWDOWN
Casper Ruud won three ATP titles in three weeks earlier this season at the Bastad, Gstaad and Kitzbuhel Opens, becoming the first man to do since Andy Murray in 2011. The Norwegian’s prowess on clay has long been lauded but much like Dominic Thiem back in 2019 he is quickly transferring his game over to the hard surface and with great effect after a first title won on hard at the San Diego Open last week – his fourth of the year. Ruud was pushed hard by another man in form on Monday, with Lloyd Harris taking the first set via a tiebreak before Ruud fought back well, extending his winning streak to six matches.
11th seed Diego Schwartzman was under fire in the third round too before totally reversing his fortunes against Dan Evans. The 29-year-old came back from a set and a break down in a stunning comeback to hand the Brit a deciding set bagel on his way to the round of 16 at Indian Wells for the first time. The Argentine won the fourth title of his career with a great campaign on home soil at the Buenos Aires Open earlier this season.
THE PREDICTION
There is a clear shift in momentum between Diego Schwartzman and Casper Ruud in their head-to-head record, with the Argentine winning each of their first four meetings up until last season’s Cincinnati Open. Ruud has won bot matches since in straight sets at the Monte-Carlo Open and Cincinnati Open this season in what has been his breakthrough year. The 22-year-old is chasing the year-end ATP Finals in much the same way that Schwartzman did last year and that should make for a symbolic battle on Wednesday. Take the sixth seed to win outright here. This could be a thriller if Schwartzman continues to fight back from the brink like this.
