THE LOWDOWN
World number two Daniil Medvedev raced toa first-set lead against Filip Krajinovic on Monday night before the Serb rallied well to force a deciding tiebreak. Medvedev turned his ruthless streak back on to win that well and reach the round of 16 at Indian Wells for the first time. The 25-year-old is riding a 10-match winning streak from his US Open title win through the Laver Cup to this round of 16 tie as he chases a fifth Masters title and a second of the year. World number 28 Grigor Dimitrov has so far impressed at Indian Wells and breaking Reilly Opelka’s serve twice to beat the big-serving American in straight sets is exceptional fare. The 30-year-old made the semi-finals of the San Diego Open last week and suddenly out of nowhere he has bested his best showing here by reaching the last 16 for the first time.
THE PREDICTION
Grigor Dimitrov beat Daniil Medvedev in their first meeting back at Queen’s Club in 2017 but the Russian has had the best of the next three to lead their head-to-head record 3-1. The most notable of those is a heart-breaking three-set defeat for Dimitrov in the semi-finals of the 2019 US Open, which remains the closest the Bulgarian has come to reaching a Grand Slam final. More recently, Medvedev made it three straight-set victories in a row with a win back in August at this very stage of the Cincinnati Masters. Given that Dimitrov has not taken a set off the newly crowned US Open champion in three attempts, taking Medvedev to win in two looks a reasonable risk outside of an accumulator. Take him as outright within one.
