World number 16 Diego Schwartzman is in some of his best hardcourt form right now and he looked assured in a brilliant tussle with Gael Monfils on Thursday to come through in three sets. The Argentine has also taken out Fabio Fognini this week as he continues in the same vein that saw him reach the quarter-finals at Indian Wells, where he lost to eventual champion Cam Norrie, and the final of the Antwerp Open, where he finished runner-up to Jannik Sinner. He would have been the solid favourite to come through this third career meeting with Frances Tiafoe ahead of last night’s action, as he has beaten the American twice this year for a 2-0 head-to-head record, but Tiafoe provided the shock of the Vienna Open so far with an incredible win over Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Coming back from a set down to beat the top seed is unquestionably good form but Tiafoe’s unique mentality makes beating the world number three for a second time this season a priority over doubling down to beat Schwartzman.
