World number 49 Clara Tauson is yet another young talent bursting through on the WTA circuit and she has been impeccable so far in two straight-set victories to reach the Courmayeur Open quarter-finals. The 18-year-old claimed her second WTA title of the season last month with an excellent campaign at the Luxembourg Open, beating Ekaterina Alexandrova, Marketa Vondrousova and Jelena Ostapenko en route, and that looks like too tough a level for world number 48 Ann Li right now. The 21-year-old is riding a seven-match winning streak from her first WTA title last week at the Tenerife Open but two dropped first sets to Kamilla Rakhimova and Magdalena Frech this campaign should be too much ground to concede to Tauson.
Tauson beat Ann Li in the semi-finals of a Challenger event in Chicago back in August but this will be their first meeting at tour level. The American’s recent win in Tenerife makes her an unknown quantity on the rise but Tauson’s star is also in the ascendency. The Dane feels like the likelier of two capable winners here and that makes taking Tauson to win at least a set the suitably cautious pick.
