THE PREDICTION
This should be an enjoyable battle between two Russian players in their ascendency, albeit at different levels right now. 22-year-old Liudmila Samsonova has conceded just nine games across two comfortable straight-set victories to reach the quarter-finals of the Courmayeur Open as the third seed here at a career-high of 42nd in the WTA world rankings. Samsonova won her first WTA title back in the summer at the Berlin Open on Grass, beating then in-form Belinda Bencic to cap off a stunning week of form. World number 114 Anna Kalinskaya, also 22, recently put in her best week of tennis yet by reaching the round of 16 at Indian Wells where she eventually lost to Ons Jabeur. A three-set victory over the sixth seed here Alison Riske is testament to her improving consistency and this should be an entertaining first meeting on Friday as a result. Samsonova must be backed to come through as the much higher-ranked player but it would not be a surprise to see in-form Kalinskaya provide an upset here. Take Samsonova to win outright, although Kalinskaya to snatch a set looks a shrewd move.
