Taylor Fritz reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon for the third time in four years as opponent Jordan Thompson retired midway through the second set in their round-of-16 match. Fritz was leading 6-1 3-0 when the Australian, who has struggled throughout the season due to injury, decided to call it quits. Fritz performed very strongly on serve and has already shown his battling spirit in the tournament by getting through in those back-to-back five setters early on.
He will go up against Karen Khachanov in the last eight as the Russian enjoyed his most comfortable win of the event so far. The Russian was always in control as he won 6-4 6-2 6-3 against Kamil Majchrzak. This was Khachanov’s first straight sets win of the tournament so far and he has now matched his best finish at the All England Club, having also made the quarters in 2021.
This is their first meeting on grass, but Khachanov does hold the upper hand in the head-to-head, winning their two previous encounters in Shanghai and the ATP Cup. Nevertheless, they haven’t faced off since 2020 and Fritz has grown and matured as a player since then. He’s enjoyed a fine grass court season up to now and will be the favourite to reach the last four here for the very first time.
