Taylor Fritz came back from the brink of a first-round exit at Wimbledon against big serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The Frenchman, who made the fourth-round here last year, went two sets to love up and was 5-1 up in the fourth set tiebreak but Fritz clawed his way back into the contest and got the all important break in the decider to win 6-7 6-7 6-4 7-6 6-4 in a match which spanned over two days.
It doesn’t get easier for Fritz as he now faces Gabriel Diallo in round two. The Canadian, who won the Libema Open last month, comfortably got past Daniel Altmaier in the first-round, winning 6-1 6-4 6-2. Both players have a combined total of 17 wins on grass over the past month and have won three events between them, with the American number one picking up titles in Stuttgart and Eastbourne.
Fritz showed great battling qualities to get through his first-round match, and it may require another gritty display get past the dangerous Diallo.
