Shintaro Mochizuki vs Karen Khachanov prediction
Shintaro Mochizuki recovered from two sets down to beat Giulio Zeppieri and win his first ever match at a Grand Slam. The Japanese qualifier crucially came out on top in a tight fourth set tiebreak and then broke late in the decider to win 2-6 3-6 6-3 7-6 7-5. He now has 11 wins on grass this season, including qualifying and Challenger events, while he’s also on a nine-match winning run.
Karen Khachanov will be his opponent in round one. Khachanov defeated Mackenzie McDonald for the second time at Wimbledon to book his place in the next stage of the major. The Russian won 7-5 6-4 6-4 and was always in control of the contest.
Mochizuki will be delighted at finally clinching his first win at a slam and has enjoyed a thoroughly successful grass court season, having won the Nottingham Open a few weeks ago. However, Khachanov is a former quarter-finalist and will fancy his chances at a deep run with the way the draw is already opening up. We predict Khachanov to win comfortably.
