Frances Tiafoe dug deep to defeat Aleksandar Kovacevic and book his place in the quarter-finals of the Mexican Open. The match went to a deciding set tiebreak, with Tiafoe dramatically saving two match points on his way to winning 6-4 3-6 7-6 (7) after two hours and 18 minutes. The two-time US Open semi-finalist now faces Mattia Bellucci.
The Italian pulled off one of the shocks of the previous round as he beat 2025 finalist Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets. Bellucci was shaky on serve in his match against Rinky Hijikata, but this was a very different story as he won 91% of his first serve points, conceded just the one break point and didn’t lose his serve throughout the match as he strolled to a 6-3 6-3 win.
Tiafoe leads the head-to-head 1-0 after winning a five set epic in the first-round of the 2024 French Open, but this will be their first meeting on a hard court. Tiafoe will need to be wary of the threat posed by Bellucci, especially in extended rallies, but his strong all-court game makes him the favourite.
