Frances Tiafoe battled his way past Ignacio Buse in his opening match at the Italian Open. Tiafoe, who had not competed on the tour for over a month, dropped the first set after losing it on a tiebreak, but he largely controlled the rest of the match to win 6-7 (5) 6-3 6-2. This is the first time he has reached the third-round of this event since 2023.

He will now face Andrea Pellegrino. The Italian advanced after Arthur Fils was forced to retire from their second-round match. Fils was trailing 4-0 in the first set when he decided to call it quits. Pellegrino beat Luca Nardi in the first-round, and his best ATP result of the season was a quarter-final appearance in Santiago.

Tiafoe is still a fine player on this surface, having got through to the quarter-finals of Roland Garros last year. He will view this as a brilliant opportunity to make a deep run in Rome ahead of the second slam of the year.
