Paraguay come into this on the back of a goalless draw against Colombia in the middle of November. That was the fifth successive match in which the Paraguayans have failed to score. In fact, they have scored just one goal in the seven matches that they have played since the Copa America in the summer of 2021. For Uruguay it is a new era. In 1983, Oscar Tabarez managed Uruguay’s under-20’s. In 1987, he did so again. Between 1988 and 1990, he managed the full national team. Then, in 2006 until 2021, he managed the national team again - as well as coaching the Uruguayan Olympic team in 2012. Now La Celeste must begin a new chapter under Diego Alonso. Alonso was the first coach of Inter Miami after a spell in Mexico with Pachuca and Monterrey. He will be looking to unleash a team that had stagnated under Tabarez and, up against a Paraguay team devoid of goal scoring and confidence, he will be confident of a victory in his first match.
