  • West Ham have won five of their previous six UEFA competition quarter-final ties.

  • Mohammed Kudus has scored five goals in his last four appearances for West Ham at home in the UEFA Europa League
  • West Ham have lost the first leg of a UEFA competition tie away from home on seven previous occasions and have won six of those ties. The London club have won two of the three ties in which they had a two-goal deficit going into the second leg at home but failed to progress the only time they lost 2-0, in the second round of the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup against Steaua București (0-0 h).
  • Leverkusen are unbeaten in their last 43 matches in all competitions (W38 D5).
  • This is Leverkusen’s seventh UEFA Cup/Europa League quarter-final appearance – more than any other German club (Hamburg, Frankfurt & Köln all 6x). They have won three of the previous six.
  • Leverkusen are aiming to reach the Europa League semi-finals for the second season in a row. At this stage of the competition in 2022/23 they won 5-2 on aggregate against Union Saint-Gilloise (1-1 h, 4-1 a)

  • Leverkusen have won three of their previous four UEFA competition two-legged ties against English teams. Most recently, a 3-2 aggregate victory against Blackburn Rovers in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup round of 32 (3-2 h, 0-0 a).
  • Leverkusen have scored two or more goals in eight of their previous nine Europa League matches this season.
  • Leverkusen have won the first leg of a European tie at home on 14 occasions and only once not progressed to the next round, losing to Atlético de Madrid in the 2014/15 Champions League round of 16 when a 1-0 victory was followed by 1-0 defeat in Spain and elimination on penalties (2-3).

THE PREDICTION

For large parts of last week it seemed as though West Ham United were about to pull off a genuinely impressive goalless draw ion Leverkusen but two late goals allowed Bayer Leverkusen to comfortably lead ahead of this second-leg. David Moyes Irons were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Fulham at the London Stadium at the weekend and that means they have managed just four victories in their last 19 matches across all competitions. Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen won the first of what could be a treble at the weekend as they hammered Werder Bremen by five goals to nil to win their first ever Bundesliga title the other day. West Ham will hope to take advantage of a Leverkusen side in a celebratory mood but the visitors should still come out on top.
