THE KEY STATS

  • Lille have won four and drawn one of their previous five UEFA competition matches at home this season.
  • Lille have won 11 and drawn four of their last 15 home matches in all competitions.
  • Lille have lost only one of their last 38 home matches in all competitions.
  • Lille have lost seven and drawn one of their last eight UEFA competition matches against English clubs. Since a 1-0 home win against Liverpool in the first leg of a 2009/10 Europa League round of 16 tie (L 3-1 on agg).
  • Lille’s 3-1 aggregate victory against Aston Villa in the semi-finals of the 2002 Intertoto Cup is their only success in their four previous UEFA competition two-legged ties against English teams.
  • Lille have not won the second leg in any of their last seven UEFA competition two-legged ties (D3 L4).
  • Lille have lost the first leg of a European tie away from home on two previous occasions, and managed to progress in one of those, most recently losing to Chelsea in the 2021/22 Champions League. They did, however, go through in the play-offs of the same competition in 2012/13 as they overturned a 1-0 loss at Copenhagen, winning the second leg 2-0 in France.
  • Aston Villa are unbeaten in their last eight UEFA Europa Conference League matches (W6 D2). A win or a draw for would see them equal their best unbeaten sequence in UEFA competitions. They set a record nine-match unbeaten run in 1982.
  • Aston Villa have lost only one of their last six UEFA competition matches away from home (W2 D3).
  • Aston Villa have lost only two of their last 12 matches in all competitions (W7 D3).
  • Aston Villa have only failed to score in one of their last 14 UEFA competition matches.
  • Aston Villa have won the first leg at home in UEFA club competition on nine occasions and progressed in eight of those ties. The only time they have been eliminated after winning the first leg at home came in the second round of the UEFA Cup in 1990/91, when their 2-0 first-leg win against Inter was overturned by a 3-0 loss in Milan. This is the first time they have won the home first leg 2-1.

THE PREDICTION

In the first-leg at Villa Park, Aston Villa had a 2-0 lead but Bafode Diakite’s late goal means that Lille have a real chance to turn this tie around this week. Paulo Fonseca’s northerners have been excellent defensively this season but they still do play a very easy on the eye and progressive style of football. Aston Villa enjoyed a superb, counter-attacking 2-0 defeat of Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium which was the absolute archetypal performance of an Unai Emery side. Villa can set up and play that way again in this second-leg and, as a result, Villa should be backed due to the effectiveness of Emery’s coaching.

TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – ASTON VILLA TO WIN OR DRAW
