THE LOWDOWN

VALENCIA

Last season, Valencia narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of the campaign under the interim management of Ruben Baraja. Ruben Baraja has remained in charge of the Valencians for the entirety of this season with the expectation being they spend the season battling against the drop but they are in a very different position.

The home team begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting just a couple of points outside of the top seven and the European spots. However, they come into this one on the back of back-to-back defeats to hold them back from a serious challenge. They were first beaten by Real Betis before then losing 4-2 to Barcelona away from home.

ALAVES

Following promotion last season, Deportivo Alaves have enjoyed something of a relatively impressive campaign with no real danger of ever being drawn into La Liga’s relegation battle. However, the Basque club were heavily rumoured to be on the verge of sacking Luis Garcia Plaza in January before a sharp turnaround in form.

They now come into this one on the back of back-to-back victories that have pushed them towards the top-half of the table. They pulled off an excellent 2-0 defeat of Atletico Madrid a couple of weeks ago before then hammering struggling Celta Vigo by three goals to nil last weekend with goals coming from Giuliano Simeone, Jon Guridi and Carlos Benavidez.

THE TEAM NEWS

VALENCIA

Georgia international goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is out suspended for this weekend, whilst both Jose Luis Gaya and Roman Yaremchuk are doubtful, too.

ALAVES

Luis Garcia Plaza only has one injury concern for this weekend’s visit down to Valencia as defender Ruben Duarte will be unavailable for this one.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Sivera; Gorosabel, Tenaglia, Guevara, Lopez; Benavidez, Blanco; Vicente, Guridi, Simeone; Kike

THE PREDICTION

This one is an intriguing clash at Mestalla. For most of this season, both of these sides have significantly overperformed their pre-season expectations but they are heading into the final month of the campaign on the back of some very different results. Valencia need to arrest their recent slight slide, whilst Alaves will be looking to kick on and maybe even push towards the top-half. Whenever Valencia have won it has tended to be low-scoring and, as favourites with home advantage, a low-scoring Valencian win would appear the bet to back.

TIP: VALENCIA TO WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
