THE LOWDOWN

REAL BETIS

Former Manchester City, Real Madrid, Malaga and West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini is potentially entering into his final month of the campaign in charge of Real Betis. With a cash strapped off-field situation, they have struggled for consistency throughout but are heading into this weekend tucked inside the top seven and the European spots.

The hosts come into this one on the back of back-to-back victories. The first of those wins saw them defeat struggling Celta Vigo by two goals to one at the Benito Villamarin before then overcoming Valencia by two goals to one at Mestalla with a match-winning brace scored by former Leicester City striker Ayoze Perez.

SEVILLA

For a second successive season, Sevilla have required three different managers to avoid relegation this season. Following on from the sackings of both Jose Luis Mendilibar and then Diego Alonso, former Watford boss Quique Sanchez Flores took his time in getting to grips with his Sevilla side but they have been excellent in the last couple of months.

Sevilla’s last match saw them overcome Real Mallorca by two goals to one at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan with second-half strikes from Youssef En-Nesyri and Isaac Romero before Abdon Prats notched a consolation goal in stoppage-time. They have now managed three successive victories and have suffered just two defeats in their last 11 matches.

THE TEAM NEWS

REAL BETIS

Both Hector Bellerin and Chimy Avila are missing this weekend’s derby through injury, whilst centre-back Marc Bartra is also a doubt as they face Sevilla.

SEVILLA

There are a few injury absentees for this weekend’s visit to Betis at the Benito Villamarin with Adria Pedrosa, Djibril Sow and Nemanja Gudelj all unavailable.

PREDICTED XI (5-3-2): Nyland; Navas, Bade, Ramos, Nianzou, Ocampos; Soumare, Agoume, Oliver Torres; Romero, En-Nesyri

THE PREDICTION

El Gran Derbi down in the ‘frying pan of Spain’ is renowned for being arguably the fiercest local derby in Spanish football and goes into the same list for the entirety of European football. We have two in-form teams, too, meeting at the Villamarin. Betis’ January transfer window and the additions they made was and were timely as they welcome a Sevilla side that have legitimately returned to their status as one of the better sides in the country in recent months. Both sides have struggled, though, and have built their improvement on good defending so that, combined with the tension of the rivalry, means it could well be fairly painful on the pitch, in lots of ways.
