THE LOWDOWN

MALLORCA

Mexican coach Javier Aguirre looks set to once again secure Real Mallorca’s La Liga status for another season. The Balearic Islanders begin the 34th match day of the 2023/24 campaign with a six-point lead over Cadiz in the bottom three and the relegation places after avoiding defeat against the Andalusians last weekend.

Mallorca took a 12th minute lead in that game against Cadiz through Vedat Muriqi before Omar Mascarell scored a second-half own goal to make it level. Mallorca have underwhelmed since losing the final of the Copa del Rey on penalties to Athletic Club. They are now unbeaten in their last five matches across all competitions.

ATLETICO MADRID

In what has been an underwhelming campaign for Diego Simeone and Los Rojiblancos, Atletico Madrid have just about managed to finish the season in a decent position. They head into the final five games of the campaign sitting six points clear of Athletic Club as they aim for a top four finish and UEFA Champions League qualification.

The visitors come into this one on the back of a vital 3-1 defeat of Athletic at the Metropolitano last weekend with goals from Rodrigo De Paul and Angel Correa being followed by an Unai Simon own goal to clinch all three points. Atletico have now managed three victories in their last four matches in La Liga.

THE TEAM NEWS

MALLORCA

There remains just one injury concern for Javier Aguirre this weekend as defender Copete is unavailable for the Balearic Islanders due to injury.

PREDICTED XI (5-4-1): Rajkovic; Gonzalez, Valjent, Raillo, Nastasic, Maffeo; Rodriguez, Costa, Mascarell, Radonjic; Muriqi

UNAVAILABLE: Copete (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

ATLETICO MADRID

Atletico Madrid are without key man Antoine Griezmann for this weekend due to suspension, whilst Gabriel is also out injured whilst Memphis Depay is a doubt.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Oblak; Witsel, Gimenez, Hermoso; Molina, De Paul, Koke, Llorente, Lino; Correa, Morata

UNAVAILABLE: Griezmann (Suspended), Gabriel Paulista (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Depay (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

As is typical of a Javier Aguirre-coached side, Real Mallorca have been extremely defensive and pragmatic throughout the campaign, which has perhaps let down some of their more creative talents such as Sergi Darder. Atletico Madrid have evolved their style this season and been much better to watch for it but if Diego Simeone needs to grind out three points in a slugfest then that is what they will do so a low-scoring away win seems a good bet for this one.

TIP: ATLETICO MADRID TO WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
