THE LOWDOWN

Cadiz

This weekend’s encounter, on the penultimate day of the 2022/23 La Liga campaign, is absolutely massive between two sides involved in the extremely tight and competitive relegation battle. Cadiz begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting on 38 points, above Real Valladolid on goal difference, who are 18th in the table.

The home team come into this on the back of a 2-0 defeat away to Villarreal in their most recent outing, during the midweek. Cadiz fell to a two-goal deficit before half-time after a Nicolas Jackson brace.

That loss means they have now suffered three defeats in their last four La Liga matches. The Andalusians know they go to Elche on the final day of the season but they will not want to risk any slip ups so it is likely they will go for hell for leather at the Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla against similarly struggling opposition.

Celta Vigo

Mid-way through the campaign, Celta Vigo replaced now Atletico Mineiro boss, Eduardo Coudet, with former Swansea City, Sheffield Wednesday and Sporting Braga coach, Carlos Carvalhal. Carvalhal’s progressive and modern style immediately led to an improvement in performances and results but they have endured a really difficult run of form as they drift down the table and into the relegation battle.

It had appeared that the Galicians were comfortably safe and might even begin to look upwards towards the top seven and the UEFA Europa Conference League qualification spot. However, they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting just two points above the bottom three and go away to one of the other sides right in the thick of it.

Their most recent outing was something of a reprieve as they shared a 1-1 draw at home to Girona in midweek. However, it followed on from four successive defeats and means they are now winless in their last five matches with one victory, coming at home to bottom-of-the-table and already relegated Elche, in their last ten.

THE PREDICTION

La Liga's relegation battle this season is excellent and fascinating viewing for the neutral. Elche have been mathematically relegated down at the bottom-of-the-table for quite some time now. However, there are two spots available with seven clubs involved in the battle. Cadiz, on 38, and Celta, on 40, will both view their chances of survival as quite high but neither will want to take the chance of taking this to the final day of the campaign. Cadiz play a naturally reactive and defensive style of football, as shown by scoring just 28 goals in 36 games this season, whilst Celta have been in wretched form in front of goal for quite some time now. Given that, this is unlikely to be a fun encounter for the neutral.
