THE LOWDOWN

PORTO

Under the management of Sergio Conceicao, Porto will be expected to challenge for the league title once again after a poor defence of the Primeira Liga title last year, with Benfica winning it. They have had a secure summer, unusually, with very few players departing over the summer and some signings such as Nico Gonzalez.

They have started the 2023/24 Primeira Liga campaign very unconvincingly with three shaky wins before dropping points in Portugal’s top-flight. They come into this on the back of a 3-1 defeat away to Shakhtar Donetsk in their most recent outing, during the week, in the opening match of their UEFA Champions League group stage campaign.

GIL VICENTE

Gil Vicente had a fairly miserable 2022/23 campaign across all competitions. The visitors were knocked out in the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Europa Conference League and battled against relegation throughout much of the campaign, eventually finishing in the bottom-half. They will expect to have a much-improved season this time around.

They have appointed former Chaves boss, Vitor Campelos, this season and begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting firmly in the middle-of-the-table with two wins and three defeats in their five matches so far this season. They come into this on the back of an entertaining 5-3 defeat of Estoril in their most recent outing.

THE PREDICTION

Throughout the campaign so far, Porto have been very unconvincing as they try and represent the epitome of modern-day Portuguese tactics. They are a reactive side reliant on playing fairly defensive football and winning games based on their moves in transition. They face a Gil Vicente side that will go at the title favourites but remain a little too weak to be a major competitor and Porto should edge out to a victory at the Dragao on Saturday evening,

TIP: PORTO TO WIN
