THE LOWDOWN

ESTORIL

Over the summer, Estoril replaced former Benfica manager Nelson Verissimo with Alvaro Pacheco, who had done excellent things with Chaves and his departure from Chaves has had a very negative impact on that club. However, Pacheco’s stint in charge of an Estoril side that will expect to push towards the top six this season has not been a good one so far.

The Canaries come into this on the back of a 5-3 defeat against Gil Vicente in their most recent outing, last weekend. That means they have started the season with four defeats and just one win in their opening five matches. In those four defeats they have conceded 13 goals but would argue they have played well, especially going forward, notching ten goals in five games so far.

VIZELA

Under the management of Alvaro Pacheco, Vizela enjoyed an impressive campaign last season as they finished seventh, pushing towards the top six and the UEFA Europa Conference League qualification spots. However, Pacheco departed the club over the summer for Estoril and he was replaced by journeyman manager Pablo Villar.

Villar has led Vizela to just one win in their opening five matches of the season as they languish down at the bottom end of the Primeira Liga table. They were beaten by AVS in the Taca da Liga in the first round before the Portuguese top-flight and they have since suffered losses to Sporting CP, Vitoria and Benfica with a draw against Arouca and a win against Gil Vicente.

VIZELA

Pablo Villar is dealing with just one injury issue ahead of their trip to Estoril with Ukrainian defender Oleg Lebedenko being the only unavailable player.

THE PREDICTION

Against his former club, Alvaro Pacheco will be searching for a spark to kick start Estoril’s poor season so far. They have underperformed in terms of results but will believe that their performances have merited more than what they have done so far. Vizela are a team that are expected to struggle throughout the 2023/24 campaign and Estoril, especially with their home advantage, are the favourites for this one.

TIP: ESTORIL TO WIN
