Maria Sakkari defeated Donna Vekic in straight sets to book her place in the second-round of the Wuhan Open. The Greek was 4-2 down in the first set but reeled off four games in a row to take the lead. More breaks were exchanged in the second, with Sakkari going on to win 6-4-6-2 after one hour and 39 minutes. She created 16 break point opportunities in total.

She will face Marta Kostyuk next. The Ukrainian has not been in action since a surprise Guadalajara Open defeat to Liudmila Samsonova.
