Ashlyn Krueger enters the main draw in Wuhan as a lucky loser. She won her first match in qualifying against Taylah Preston, before a defeat to Yulia Putintseva. Krueger lost in the second-round of the China Open to Ann Li. Her most impressive achievement this season was her credible run to the round-of-16 at Wimbledon. 

She plays Shuai Zhang in the first-round. The Chinese veteran did not compete in the singles at her home event but still made it all the way to the doubles final alongside Katerina Siniakova. Zhang’s highlight of the season was a semi-final appearance at the Merida Open, despite only securing her place in the draw as a qualifier.
