THE LOWDOWN

LAZIO

It has been a generally underwhelming campaign for Lazio on the face of it but they head into the final few months of the season in the hunt for UEFA Champions League quarter-final football, leading Bayern Munich by a goal to nil on aggregate after winning the first-leg between the sides at Stadio Olimpico a few weeks ago, and in touch with the European spots in Serie A.

After typically whinging for the vast majority of the summer, Maurizio Sarri has been able to steady the ship, albeit Lazio have picked up results with performances not necessarily indicative of Sarri’s preferred style of football. They suffered a 2-1 defeat at the Artemio Franchi against Fiorentina on Monday evening after leading at half-time.

AC MILAN

Stefano Pioli comes under heavy criticism as AC Milan boss from AC Milan supporters but the 2022 Scudetto winner has his Rossoneri side into the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League as well as fairly well cemented in the top four and the UEFA Champions League qualifying spots playing an entertaining brand of football, despite being this widely viewed as a transitional campaign.

They were held to a 1-1 draw with in-form and high-flying Atalanta at San Siro last weekend with Teun Koopmeiners scoring a late penalty to cancel out Rafael Leao’s opener. In their 26 matches in the 2023/24 Serie A campaign so far, there has been a combined total of 82 goals in those games with 50 scored and 32 conceded.

THE TEAM NEWS

LAZIO

Lazio have two key injury issues as defender Patric is missing for this weekend and they will also be without key midfielder, Nicolo Rovella.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Provedel; Lazzari, Casale, Romagnoli, Marusic; Guendouzi, Cataldi, Luis Alberto; Isaksen, Immobile, Anderson

UNAVAILABLE: Patric (Injured), Rovella (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

AC MILAN

Former Real Madrid man Luka Jovic is missing through suspension for this weekend, whilst midfielder Tommaso Pobega is out injured.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Maignan; Florenzi, Thiaw, Gabbia, Hernandez; Adli, Bennacer; Pulisic, Loftus-Cheek, Leao; Giroud

UNAVAILABLE: Jovic (Suspended), Pobega (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

THE PREDICTION

On paper, in terms of club size and reputation, this should be a relatively fun and intriguing contest but there are fears that it could be one-sided. Lazio have the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second-leg against Bayern Munich to pre-occupy them so as they welcome an AC Milan side with plenty of depth to the capital, Milan will be the firm favourites and it could get a little bit messy, especially with the absences of Patric and Nicolo Rovella.

TIP: AC MILAN TO WIN
