THE LOWDOWN
FIORENTINA
After reaching both the final of the Coppa Italia and the final of the UEFA Europa Conference League last season, Fiorentina will be aiming to emulate that again this season but, naturally, go a couple of steps further and not end up as runners’ up in both competitions. They have the distraction of a cup semi against Atalanta and then a European quarter against Viktoria Plzen later this month.
I Viola, coached by Vincenzo Italiano, begin this weekend’s round of fixtures, though, slightly fading in Serie A. They have drifted to eighth in the table at the start of the match day, which will, with the expansion and new format of European competitions for next season be enough to make UEFA Europa Conference League football again.
AC MILAN
After what was a disappointing and frustrating start to the campaign, seven-time European champions AC Milan have an excellent opportunity to finish the season extremely well. They have been magnificent for a few months in Serie A and also have a UEFA Europa League quarter-final against Roma to look forward to.
The Rossoneri come into this one on the back of a 3-1 defeat of Hellas Verona in their most recent outing a couple of weeks ago, prior to the March international break. That win means that Milan have now enjoyed five successive victories across all competitions. They have been thrilling to watch this season with their 29 Serie A matches consisting of 88 goals.
THE TEAM NEWS
FIORENTINA
Italian international midfielder Giacomo Bonaventura remains the only availability issue for Fiorentina this weekend as he is suspended.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Terracciano; Kayode, Milenkovic, Ranieri, Biraghi; Lopez, Mandragora; Gonzalez, Bonaventura, Sottil; Belotti
UNAVAILABLE: Bonaventura (Suspended)
QUESTIONABLE:
AC MILAN
AC Milan are without Theo Hernandez due to suspension, whilst club captain, Denmark international Simon Kjaer, is a doubt for this weekend’s trip to Florence.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Maignan; Calabria, Gabbia, Tomori, Florenzi; Bennacer, Reijnders; Pulisic, Loftus-Cheek, Leao; Okafor
UNAVAILABLE: Hernandez (Suspended), Kalulu (Injured), Jimenez (Injured), Pobega (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Kjaer (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
Vincenzo Italiano’s Fiorentina have bigger fish to fry perhaps in the remainder of this campaign than Serie A football. UEFA Champions League qualification remains a possibility but making amends by achieving silverware unlike last season would surely be a bigger incentive. AC Milan have been extremely impressive for a few months now and leapfrogged Juventus before the break so siding with them would appear a safe, value bet at the Artemio Franchi on Saturday evening.
TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – MILAN TO WIN OR DRAW
