THE LOWDOWN

EMPOLI

Empoli have spent much of the campaign ruing an absolutely woeful start to the season which eventually led to the sacking of Paolo Zanetti and the re-appointment of Aurelio Andreazzoli. Once that also didn’t work out, the Florence-based club turned to Serie A’s ‘miracle worker’ Davide Nicola with the intention being he repeat the great escapes he achieved at both Crotone and Salernitana.

They began extremely well and performances have remained much-improved from what went before but the hosts have drifted again and become fairly inconsistent. They are hovering just above the bottom three and the relegation places after they were comfortably defeated by two goals to nil in Bergamo against Atalanta last weekend.

FROSINONE

Immediately after gaining promotion back to the top-flight last season, Frosinone decided to part company with 2006 FIFA World Cup winner Fabio Grosso, replacing him with former Roma boss Eusebio Di Francesco. Things have gone in a typically Di Francesco style with a front foot and aggressive style of football but they are struggling.

The Romans’ 34 matches in Serie A so far this season have consisted of 106 goals with 43 scored and 63 conceded but they have spent the majority of the last few months in the bottom three and the relegation places. Their 3-0 hammering of bottom-of-the-table and now relegated Salernitana, though, has lifted them out of the danger zone.

THE TEAM NEWS

EMPOLI

Aridan Ismajli is a doubt for this weekend but they have some key injury concerns, too, such as Tyronne Ebuehi, Alberto Cerri and Sebastian Walukiewicz.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Caprile; Bereszynski; Goglichidze, Luperto; Gyasi, Grassi, Maleh, Pezzella; Fazzini, Cambiaghi; Niang

UNAVAILABLE: Walukiewicz (Injured), Cerri (Injured), Ebuehi (Injured), Guarino (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Ismajli (Injured)

FROSINONE

Mateus Lusuardi is a doubt for this weekend, whilst Stefano Turati, Anthony Oyono, Abdou Harroui and Sergio Kalaj are definitely unavailable due to injury.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-1-2): Turati; Lirola, Romagnoli, Okoli; Zortea, Barrenechea, Mazzitelli, Valeri; Brescianini; Soule, Cheddira

UNAVAILABLE: Turati (Injured), Harroui (Injured), Oyono (Injured), Kalaj (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Lusuardi (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

One of the bottom three places has now been mathematically filled by Salernitana but two remain up in the hair. These two sides begin the match day sitting 16th and 17th outside of the bottom three, level on goal difference and just two points above the drop zone. Empoli have been typically defensive and they are the joint lowest scorers in the league, whilst Frosinone have begun to temper their gung-ho nature as they also battle against the drop. Given that, as well as the tension and stakes, a low-scoring encounter seems likely.

TIP: UNDER 3.5 GOALS
