THE LOWDOWN

ATALANTA

Under the management of Gian Piero Gasperini, Atalanta have enjoyed an exceptional campaign in what was supposed to be a transitional season. The Bergamasci begin the weekend’s round of fixtures sitting four points outside of the top five, with fifth place likely to be enough to ensure UEFA Champions League qualification.

Aside from their strong form in Serie A, they are also fighting on two other fronts as we head into the final month of the campaign. After defeating Liverpool by three goals to one on aggregate in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League and come into this one on the back of hammering Fiorentina to reach the final of the Coppa Italia.

EMPOLI

Both Paolo Zanetti and Aurelio Andreazzoli were sacked earlier this season with Empoli firmly involved in the Serie A relegation battle. However, ever since the appointment of the Italian ‘miracle worker’ Davide Nicola, who pulled off great escapes with both Crotone and Salernitana, Empoli are hovering just above the bottom three and the relegation places.

The Florence-based club come into this one on the back off a slender 1-0 defeat of Napoli in their most recent outing last weekend at Stadio Carlo Castellani last weekend with a fourth minute winning goal from Alberto Cerri. They have won five of their eight wins in Serie A in their last 13 games since Nicola’s appointment.

THE TEAM NEWS

QUESTIONABLE:

EMPOLI

Gabriele Guarino is a doubt for this weekend’s clash with Atalanta, whilst Tyronne Ebuehi, Aridan Ismajli and forward Alberto Cerri unavailable for this one.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Caprile; Bereszynski, Walukiewicz, Luperto; Gyasi, Maleh, Grassi, Pezzella; Fazzini, Cambiaghi; Niang

UNAVAILABLE: Cerri (Injured), Ismajli (Injured), Ebuehi (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Guarino (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Atalanta have just taken down one Florence-based club with their 4-2 aggregate defeat of Fiorentina in the cup and now they are tasked with another as an in-form Empoli head to Bergamo. Atalanta will get on the front foot against Empoli as they always do with Empoli’s intention, especially since the appointment of Nicola, being to sit back and frustrate. Atalanta have not been overwhelming in attack like they have in the recent past but should still come out on top in a lower scoring affair.

TIP: ATALANTA TO WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
