The Bundesliga season reaches its halfway point this week but already this has the look of a relegation six-pointer about it. Schalke could not build on their first win in 31 Bundesliga games as they went down 3-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday, which saw them return to the foot of the table. They are five points off the relegation play-off spot, which is currently occupied by opponents Koln. The Billy Goats’ 0-0 draw with Hertha at the weekend was not only their fifth league game without a win but also their fifth without scoring. In fact, these two sides are the joint second-lowest scorers in the league, although teenage striker Matthew Hoppe is trying to do something about that for Schalke with four goals in the last two games. In any case, Koln are likely to focus on avoiding defeat here and keeping the Royal Blues at a distance, so do not expect many goals.
