THE PREDICTION
These two sides looked like serious title contenders at the end of last year but poor starts to 2021 mean this match-up between second and third is probably more about Champions League qualification than the title race now. RB Leipzig suffered a shock 3-2 defeat at second-from-bottom Mainz last Saturday, only their third reverse in the Bundesliga this season, leaving them seven points behind leaders Bayern. Still, only one of those defeats has come at the Red Bull Arena, where Julian Nagelsmann’s side have won seven of their nine league matches this season. Bayer Leverkusen were also on the losing end against Wolfsburg last weekend, making it four defeats from their last six outings. On top of that, the visitors’ injury list has grown this week with influential midfield duo Julian Baumgartlinger and Nadiem Amiri both ruled out. The last three meetings between the two sides have ended 1-1 but Leipzig’s home record and Leverkusen’s personnel issues swing it in favour of a home win.
