Bayer Leverkusen’s bad start to 2021 was compounded by a shock defeat to fourth-tier side Rot-Weiss Essen in the DFB Cup in midweek. All five of the Werkself’s Bundesliga defeats this season have come in their last seven games, and worryingly they have failed to score in three of the last four having been free-scoring earlier in the campaign. So they could very much do with a win here, but that will not be easy against a Stuttgart side who boast the second-best away record in the league. The visitors returned to winning ways last Friday with a 2-0 victory over Mainz following back-to-back defeats, although they were also knocked out of the cup in midweek. Incidentally, that Mainz win was VfB’s first clean sheet in the league since October while Leverkusen have only failed to find the net in two of their last 17 Bundesliga matches at the BayArena, so Both Teams To Score has to be considered between two attack-minded sides.
