- Mainz went down to their third defeat in four games at Fortuna Dusseldorf last Saturday, leaving them second from bottom in the table.
- Midfielder Edimilson Fernandes is suspended after his dismissal at Dusseldorf and his likely replacement, Danny Latza, is nursing a knee injury so Ridle Baku could start.
- Liverpool loanee Taiwo Awoniyi was handed his first start against Dusseldorf but after being taken off at half-time, it seems unlikely he will keep his place.

Just a point separates these two sides at the bottom of the table but Koln go into Friday's meeting in slightly better form. Their 3-0 win over Paderborn last weekend will have boosted their confidence and they are certainly worth backing against a Mainz side who have largely been poor this season.
