THE LOWDOWN

RENNES

In the November international break, Julian Stephan was re-appointed Stade Rennais boss as he replaced the underperforming former Olympique Lyonnais manager Bruno Genesio. Rennes spent a few months significantly improving but have since regressed again and they have slipped away from the top six and the European spots.

However, the home team do come into this one on the back of a much-needed victory against Nantes last weekend, ending a three-match losing streak. Rennes went to Stade de la Beaujoire – Louis Fonteneau and ran out 3-0 winners with second-half goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Benjamin Bourigeaud and Amine Gouiri.

BREST

There are several teams that have significantly overperformed and put themselves into the category of being the ‘story of the season’, such as Girona and Bayer Leverkusen. However, considering they have one of the smallest budgets in Ligue 1, the job that Eric Roy has done at Stade Brest has been absolutely astonishing.

The visitors begin the match day sitting tucked inside the top three and on the verge of potentially qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. Brest may well be feeling the pressure, though, as they come into this one on the back of back-to-back defeats against Monaco and Olympique Lyonnais in the last couple of weeks.

THE PREDICTION

The issue that Rennes had at the start of this season was that they had an abundance of attacking talent but were often too reactionary in their style of football and failed to get the most out of that. That is something that Stephan has definitely improved. Brest, on the other hand, have been excellent defensively but since the March international break, that is what has declined and set them back a little bit. Either way, it means it has been set up for the neutral quite well this weekend.
