THE LOWDOWN

NANTES

Last month, Pierre Aristouy was eventually relieved of his duties with the 2022 Coupe de France winners and 2023 cup runners’ up hovering down in the relegation battle in Ligue 1 and he was replaced by Jocelyn Gourvennac with Nantes’ form had improved with two wins in his opening three matches but that has drifted again.

The home team come into this one on the back of three defeats in their last four matches as they begin the weekend sitting third from bottom in the relegation playoff place. Their most recent outing saw them comfortably defeated by Olympique de Marseille by two goals to nil at Stade Velodrome, last weekend.

STRASBOURG

Like a couple of other clubs, such as Lorient, Strasbourg’s on-pitch performances have been consistently impacted by vociferous supporters protestation this season with the Alsace-based club taken over by BlueCo and Todd Boehly to become more or less a feeder club to Chelsea in the Premier League.

Patrick Vieira just about remains in charge of Strasbourg but they have sunk down to just above the bottom three and the relegation places as they come into this one on the back of yet another defeat, losing 1-0 at home to Monaco last weekend. That means they are winless in their last eight Ligue 1 outings.

THE PREDICTION

It would be another big blow to the top-flight of French football if a club the size of either Nantes or Strasbourg was to fall through the Ligue 1 trap door but that really does appear to be a genuine possibility for this one. The two teams have struggled badly in recent times and both managers are really under pressure. This one will tense, tight and nervy and not remotely appetising for the neutral so under 3.5 goals appears almost inevitable.

TIP: UNDER 3.5 GOALS
