THE LOWDOWN
MARSEILLE
Jean-Louis Gasset became their third manager of the campaign in mid-February Olympique de Marseille immediately enjoyed a much-improved, high-scoring run of form. The southerners, though, have been fairly inconsistent across all competitions ever since just before the March international break.
Even despite reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League with a penalty shootout victory over Benfica in the quarters, Marseille have now managed just one win in their last seven matches. Their most recent outing saw them share a 2-2 draw with Toulouse last weekend with Faris Moumbagna scoring a 96th minute equaliser for l’OM.
NICE
Nice begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting tucked inside the top five and the European spots with five games of the 2023/24 campaign to go. They started the season extremely well but have since drifted away from the very top-of-the-table. However, they do come into this one on the back of an impressive and much-needed victory.
Francesco Farioli’s side hammered struggling Lorient by three goals to nil at the Allianz Riviera last weekend. Former Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Sanson opened the scoring in the 22nd minute of the match before second-half goals for Nice came from former Chelsea man Jeremie Boga as well as Evann Guessand.

THE PREDICTION
This clash is known as Derby de la Mediterranee and features two teams that have really underperformed in the calendar year of 2024. As mentioned, Marseille have significantly faded since the ‘new manager bounce’ of Jean-Louis Gasset. Nice, on the other hand, started the season without a defeat in their opening 13 matches but have since suffered a defeat in half of their next 16 games. Given the poor form of both sides, as well as the fact Nice’s matches have consisted of just 53 goals, a low-scoring encounter is to be expected at Stade Velodrome.
